Margaret's father was William Moses and her mother was Hannah Brereton. Her paternal grandparents were Aaron Moses and Eliza Edwards; her maternal grandparents were William Brereton and Elizabeth Brockley. She had four brothers named Thomas, John, George and Frederick. She was the oldest of the five known children.
