Frederick was born in 1885. Frederick's father was William Moses and his mother was Hannah Brereton. His paternal grandparents were Aaron Moses and Eliza Edwards; his maternal grandparents were William Brereton and Elizabeth Brockley. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, John, George and Margaret. He was the youngest of the five known children.
