Fred's father was Samuel Brereton and his mother was Nancy Jane Moses. His paternal grandparents were William Brereton and Elizabeth Brockley; his maternal grandparents were Aaron Moses and Eliza Edwards. He had three brothers named Sam, Aaron and Thomas. He was the youngest of the four children.
