William's father was William Mather and his mother was Ann Burchall.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, William and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died in December 1867 in Bolton.  He was buried in December 1867 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.
