William's father was William Mather and his mother was Ann Burchall. His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, William and Mary. He was the fourth oldest of the five children. He died in 1867 in Bolton.
