James' father was William Mather and his mother was Ann Burchall.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, William and Mary.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 54 in 1918.
