William's father was William Mather and his mother was Ann Burchall.  His paternal grandparents were James (Jacobi) Mather and Margaret Wood. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, William and Mary.  He was the youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 29 in March 1902 in Bolton.  He was buried in March 1902 at Tonge-with-Haulgh Cemetery.
