William was born in September 1863 in Bolton.1  William's father was David Mather and his mother was Esther Heaton.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. He had four brothers and two sisters, named Richard, Alfred, William, Joseph, Ann and Sarah.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.
