Sarah was born in December 1858 in Bolton.1  Sarah's father was David Mather and her mother was Esther Heaton.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. She had five brothers and a sister, named Richard, Alfred, William, William, Joseph and Ann.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
