Ann was born in 1852 in Little Bolton and her baptism took place on September 7th, 1852 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Ann's father was David Mather and her mother was Esther Heaton.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Alice Gore. She had five brothers and a sister, named Richard, Alfred, William, William, Joseph and Sarah.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
