William was born on May 3rd, 1615 in Turton.1  William's father was Nicholas Mather and his mother was Susannah Thorpe.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Mather. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, James, Thomas, Margaret and Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
