James was born on January 11th, 1613 in Turton.1  James' father was Nicholas Mather and his mother was Susannah Thorpe.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Mather. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, William, Thomas, Margaret and Elizabeth.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 41 on May 23rd, 1654 in Turton.  He was buried on May 26th, 1654 at St. Peter's (Bolton).2
