Thomas was born in 1819 in Withnell and his baptism took place on December 12th, 1819 in Brindle.¹

Thomas' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Jane (Jenny) Fish. His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Peggy Duerden. He had a brother and a sister, named Robert and Jane. He was the second oldest of the three children.
