Thomas was born in 1834 in Billinge.1  Thomas' father was James Mather and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) White.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Betty Anderton. He had two brothers and a sister, named Isaac, Isaac and Harriet.  He was the oldest of the four children.
