Thomas was born in 1897 in Bolton.1  Thomas' father was Edward Mather and his mother was Catherine Jones.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Doud. He had a brother and two sisters, named Joseph, Elizabeth and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the four children.
