Joseph was born in 1906 in Bolton.1  Joseph's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Catherine Jones.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Doud. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Elizabeth and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the four children.
