Thomas was born in 1853 in Stockport.1  Thomas' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Mary Holland.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Charlotte Sidlow. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, James, John and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
