Sarah was born in 1855 in Stockport.1  Sarah's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Mary Holland.  Her paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Charlotte Sidlow. She had four brothers named John, Thomas, James and John.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
