John was born in 1851 in Stockport.1  John's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Mary Holland.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Charlotte Sidlow. He had three brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, John and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the five children.
