Samuel was baptised the son of Henry and Charlotte at Newbent Chapel (Chowbent). His father Henry died when he was 6, and his mother Charlotte remarried, so it is possible he was brought up (fostered) by his uncle John, a Plumber & Glazier (and possibly a Joiner).
After his father died, Samuel moved to Brinnington, Cheshire (with his mother). Samuel's mother married Thomas Hadfield 21 Aug 1836 in Cheadle, Cheshire.
In 1850, Samuel, Son of "John" Mather a Joiner married Mary Holland at Heaton Chapel, St Thomas, Heaton Norris, Manchester.
In 1851, Samuel born Chowbent, and Mary (24 & 25) were at Stockport with Samuel's mother Charlotte Hadfield (73) and their 4 month old child John Mather. (John's birth record confirms the MMN = HOLLAND)
