Thomas was born in 1832 in Withnell and his baptism took place on September 10th, 1832 in Tockholes.1  Thomas' father was Edmund Mather and his mother was Jane (Jenny) Marsden.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Mason. He had a brother named Jonathan.  He was the older of the two children. He had a half-brother named James.
