Jonathan was born in 1837 in Withnell and his baptism took place on May 3rd, 1837 in Tockholes.1  Jonathan's father was Edmund Mather and his mother was Jane (Jenny) Marsden.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Mason. He had a brother named Thomas.  He was the younger of the two children. He had a half-brother named James.  He died at the age of 50 in 1887 in Manchester.2
