James was born in 1817 in Blackburn and his baptism took place there on June 20th, 1817.1  James' father was Edmund Mather and his mother was Betty Wilkinson.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Esther Mason. He had two half-brothers named Thomas and Jonathan.
