Thomas' father was John Mather and his mother was Jane Holt.  His paternal grandparents were Abraham Mather and Ales (Alice) Rothwell. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, James, Ann, Margaret and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 4 in November 1760 in Radcliffe.  He was buried on November 6th, 1760 at Turton Chapel.²
