Samuel was born in December 1857 in Whitefield.1  Samuel's father was John Mather and his mother was Sarah Ogden.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Mary Allen. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Francis, Henry, Albert, Mary and Rachel.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
