Richard's father was Richard Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Alice Holt. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Mather and Ann Lightbown. He had three brothers named John, George and Joseph. He was the oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 72 in December 1982 in Bolton.²
