Richard's father was Andrew Mather and his mother was Ann Lightbown. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Margaret Gerrard. He had a brother and two sisters, named William, Mary and Margaret. He was the third oldest of the four children. He died at the age of 66 in April 1947 in Farnworth. His burial was on April 17th, 1947 at the St. James (New Bury).²
