Richard was born in September 1846 in Whitefield.1  Richard's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Charlotte Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Esther Barlow. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, John, Samuel and Esther.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
