James was born in December 1838.  James' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Charlotte Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Esther Barlow. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, John, Samuel, Richard and Esther.  He was the second oldest of the six children.  He died before 1851.
