Esther was born in July 1853 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on July 24th, 1853 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Esther's father was Samuel Mather and her mother was Charlotte Jones.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Esther Barlow. She had five brothers named Thomas, James, John, Samuel and Richard.  She was the youngest of the six children.
