John was born in June 1841 in Whitefield.1  John's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Charlotte Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Esther Barlow. He had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, James, Samuel, Richard and Esther.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
