Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Hannah Halliday. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Jim, John, Fred, Ellen and Elizabeth. She was the fifth oldest of the six children.
