Ellen's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Hannah Halliday. Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Jim, John, Fred, Mary and Elizabeth. She was the fourth oldest of the six children.
