John was born in December 1879 in Atherton.1  John's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Hannah Halliday.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Ellen Mort. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Jim, Fred, Ellen, Mary and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
