Martha was born in 1867 in Little Hulton.¹ Martha's father was John Mather and her mother was Alice Millington. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Tyldesley. She had a brother and three sisters, named John, Sarah, Caroline and Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the five children.
