John was born in 1871 in Little Hulton.¹ John's father was John Mather and his mother was Alice Millington. His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Tyldesley. He had four sisters named Sarah, Martha, Caroline and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the five children.
