Martha was born in September 1853 in Bolton.1  Martha's father was James (Jacobi) Mather and her mother was Margaret Wood. She had five brothers and two sisters, named William, James, Joseph, John, Thomas, Jane and Mary.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
