Margaret was born in December 1872 in Darwen.1  Margaret's father was Thomas Kay and her mother was Ann Mayoh. She had a brother and two sisters, named James, Jane and Margery.  She was the oldest of the four children. She had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, James, Ralph, Alfred, Thomas, Emma and Agnes.
