James was born in March 1881 in Darwen.1  James' father was Thomas Kay and his mother was Ann Mayoh. He had three sisters named Margaret, Jane and Margery.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, James, Ralph, Alfred, Thomas, Emma and Agnes.
