Jane was born in March 1877 in Darwen.1  Jane's father was Thomas Kay and her mother was Ann Mayoh. She had a brother and two sisters, named James, Margaret and Margery.  She was the second oldest of the four children. She had five half-brothers and two half-sisters, named John, James, Ralph, Alfred, Thomas, Emma and Agnes.
