Justin's father was James Mather and his mother was Fanny Davies.  His paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Alice Tweedy. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, James, Alice, Emma and Kate.  He was the second youngest of the six children.  He died at the age of 8 in September 1882 in Prestwich.²
