Joseph's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Margaret Robinson. He had three brothers and six sisters, named John, Henry, William, Ann, Sarah, Mary, Elizabeth, Esther and Margaret.  He was the fifth oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 1 in April 1815 in Levenshulme.  He was buried on April 25th, 1815 in Heaton Norris.
