Joseph was born in March 1811 in Edensor and his baptism took place there on March 10th, 1811.1  Joseph's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Daffin.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah Crowder. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, Samuel, George and Hannah.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 79 in August 1890 in Matlock.  He was buried on August 19th, 1890 in Edensor.2

‌Joseph and Martha were married in a religious ceremony on November 29th, 1830 in Bakewell.2
