John was born in June 1812 in Edensor and his baptism took place there on October 18th, 1812.1  John's father was William Mather and his mother was Mary Daffin.  His paternal grandparents were William Mather and Hannah Crowder. He had three brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Samuel, George and Hannah.  He was the third oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 36 in October 1848 in Derbyshire.  He was buried on October 15th, 1848 in Edensor.2
