John's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Sarah Baxter.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth Gregory. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Elizabeth.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 2 in 1873 in WestLeigh.²
