John was born in 1869 in Bedford (Leigh).1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Sarah Ann Lee.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth Gregory. He had a brother and a sister, named Thomas and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 89 in 1958.
