John was born in March 1846 in Bolton.1  John's father was Joshua Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Kay.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Margaret (Peggy) Smith. He had a brother and four sisters, named Thomas, Margaret, Catherine, Margaret and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the six children.
