James was born in June 1795 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on June 21st, 1795 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  James' father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ann Ingham.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Rachel Ogden. He had three brothers named Robert, Richard and Thomas.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
