James Mather

James was born in 1796 in Atherton and his baptism took place on June 5th, 1796 at St. John the Baptist (Atherton).¹²

James' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Ellen Green. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Green and Margaret Speakman. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Samuel, Ann and Jane. He was the fifth oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 38 in February 1834 in Hindley. His burial was on February 23rd, 1834 at St. Mary (Deane).³

General Notes
- This is not the James b.1792 from Rumworth in 1841. The 1851 cesus shows that James was born in Turton
  
  James did NOT marry Betty Jameson on 5th Jan 1815 at Leigh. That was another older James Mather b.1792 Atherton that lived to over 80.
  
  Therefore, this leaves James b.1796 from Hindley who was buried at Deane in 1834, aged 38. He may have married Esther Plat 13 Feb 1814 at Leigh. There are no Leigh baptisms for James and Esther.
