James' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Ellen Green.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Green and Margaret Speakman. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Samuel, Ann and Jane.  He was the third oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 3 in June 1795 in Atherton.  He was buried on June 27th, 1795 at St. Mary (Deane).^2 1
