James was born on April 9th, 1805 in Darwen and his baptism took place on May 31st, 1805 at Over Darwen Lower Chapel conducted by H W T .1  James' father was William (Will) Mather and his mother was Betty Beswick.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Ellen Chambers. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Abraham, William, Ann, Betty and Nancy.  He was the second oldest of the seven children.
